Coming back from Cap-Haïtien to JFK means a connection in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, and immigration happens at that first US airport, not in New York. Allow at least two and a half hours in Miami for immigration, bag pickup, customs, re-check and TSA. If the connection is on separate tickets (Sunrise into Fort Lauderdale, then JetBlue), a delay on the first flight is your risk, so leave four hours or fly the day before. Once at JFK, the AirTrain connects to the LIRR at Jamaica and the A train at Howard Beach; Brooklyn is under an hour by car outside rush hour.

When to book

Fares to Haiti peak from December 15 to January 8 and again in July and August, when the diaspora travels for the holidays and summer. Late January through April is the quietest and cheapest window. Book 6 to 10 weeks ahead for holiday travel; two to four weeks is usually enough in spring. Hurricane season runs June through November and can move flights at short notice.

About the airports

CAP

Cap-Haïtien International Airport

Cap-Haïtien, HT · America/Port-au-Prince

Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP), also called Hugo Chávez International, is Haiti's second airport and, since November 2024, the only one US airlines are allowed to use. It sits on the coastal plain just south of the city, a few minutes from the historic center and about 20 km from the Citadelle Laferrière and Sans-Souci Palace at Milot. The airport was expanded in 2013 to take Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft on international flights, and it now carries the bulk of Haiti's traffic with the United States: Sunrise Airways from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boston and Newark, and American Airlines daily from Miami starting November 1, 2026.

JFK

John F. Kennedy International Airport

New York, US · America/New_York

John F. Kennedy International is the main international airport for New York and the departure point for Delta's nonstops to Lagos, Accra and Dakar, JetBlue's Caribbean network and Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca. For Haiti it currently offers connections only; the New York nonstop to Cap-Haïtien is at Newark. Brooklyn's Flatbush and East Flatbush, home to the largest Haitian community in the Northeast, are 30 to 60 minutes away.
