Cap-Haïtien to Port-au-Prince by road: what you need to know before you consider it

Safety caveat, read first. The US State Department rates Haiti Level 4, Do Not Travel, in an advisory updated July 10, 2026, and specifically warns about the roads into Port-au-Prince, where armed groups have set up roadblocks and kidnappings have occurred. Jetvala does not sell, arrange or recommend ground transport between Cap-Haïtien and Port-au-Prince in 2026. This guide exists because people ask, and an honest answer is better than silence. Make your own decision with current information from people on the ground.

The route

Route Nationale 1 runs from Cap-Haïtien south and west through Limbé, Plaisance, Gonaïves, Saint-Marc, Montrouis, Arcahaie and Cabaret to Port-au-Prince. It is about 250 km (155 miles). In good years the drive took five to seven hours in a private vehicle. The road surface varies from decent asphalt to broken sections around Plaisance and between Gonaïves and Saint-Marc, and heavy rain floods low sections near Montrouis.

Why the drive is different in 2026

The problem is not the road; it is control of it. Armed groups have held the Arcahaie and Cabaret corridor north of Port-au-Prince intermittently since 2023, and the last 40 km into the capital pass through areas where checkpoints appear without warning. Buses have been stopped, vehicles taken, passengers robbed and, in documented cases, kidnapped for ransom. The State Department advisory names kidnapping as a risk to US citizens regardless of where they were born. Conditions change week to week and can be calm for a month and then not.

What travelers who do it actually do

We are not endorsing this; we are describing it. Families who make the trip use a driver they know personally, in an unmarked vehicle, leaving Cap-Haïtien at dawn to reach Port-au-Prince by early afternoon. They check with contacts in Arcahaie and Cabaret the night before and again the morning of. They carry little cash and no visible valuables, keep phones out of sight, and do not stop. Many now break the trip at Gonaïves or Saint-Marc and only continue with same-day confirmation that the corridor is quiet. Some use the coastal boat services between Saint-Marc and Port-au-Prince rather than the road, which carries its own risks.

The alternatives

Wait. The FAA order expires March 2, 2027 unless renewed, and American Airlines has said its Port-au-Prince plans depend on the FAA. When the airport reopens, that is the safe way in.

Fly Cap-Haïtien and stay in the north. If family can meet you in Cap-Haïtien, Milot or Limbé instead of you going south, that is what most people are doing in 2026.

Domestic flights. Haitian domestic carriers have operated Cap-Haïtien to Port-au-Prince flights at times; availability changes and the Port-au-Prince airport approach is the same area the FAA is concerned about. Ask us for the current picture; we will tell you what we know and what we do not.

Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince. The road from the Dominican Republic through Malpasse and Croix-des-Bouquets passes through some of the most contested territory in the country. It is not a safer alternative.

If you go anyway

Register with STEP. Leave your itinerary with someone in the US and someone in Haiti. Carry a photocopy of your passport separately. Keep the US Embassy Port-au-Prince number (+509 2229 8000) saved. Do not travel after 3 pm. Do not post your movements on social media until after you arrive.

Signals to watch before deciding

If you are still weighing it, these are the signals people on the ground use. Whether the Gonaïves to Saint-Marc buses ran the previous day and at what price (a sudden jump means drivers are pricing in risk). Whether the police checkpoint at Cabaret is staffed. Whether local radio in Saint-Marc reports activity on the road. Whether your contact in Port-au-Prince would make the trip in reverse that morning. Any one of those turning negative is enough reason to stay in the north.
